Speech Pathologist

Position Details

Location: Australia-wide (work from home)

Time commitment: As a contractor you will be able to determine your work hours and days, from a minimum 15 hours per week up to full-time

Rate: $55 - $88 per hour plus super

Reporting to: Clinical Services Manager

Direct reports: Allied Health Assistants

Other key relationships

  • Internal: Occupational therapists, other speech pathologists, wider Umbo team

  • External: Families, Schools, Other providers and referral sources

Position Purpose

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and driven speech therapist to help deliver speech services to families living across Australia, particularly those in rural and regional areas of Australia. We are a social enterprise dedicated to working with families to ensure that they have access to allied health services. 

The purpose of this position is to deliver high quality speech and language pathology services to adults and children in rural Australia with communication and/or swallowing difficulties via Umbo’s online platform. 

Key Areas of Responsibility    Core clinical role
  • Assess, implement, and manage client supports in accordance with best practice. 

  • Demonstrate in assessment and intervention an advanced level of clinical reasoning, professional knowledge and judgement in the clinical area of Speech Pathology services. 

  • Collaboratively develop intervention plans, including short- and long-term goals, in line with the client’s NDIS or other determined goals.

  • Develop the client’s speech pathology program in consultation with the key worker, family, and support network. 

  • Work cooperatively and effectively within the interdisciplinary team to provide families with a high quality, coordinated service. 

  • Identify relevant referrals to other disciplines, services and organisations

  • Maintain documentation including evaluation/assessment reports, progress notes, communication and swallowing plans in a timely and professional manner. 

  • Ensure client confidentiality in all situations as required

  • Work with admin staff to book appointments, and complete admin duties of the role
     
  • Proactively work towards achieving 75% billable hours
Continuing education and training
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision 

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and leading professional development sessions. 

  • Share knowledge and provide clinical orientation to Umbo staff and volunteers.

Quality assurance

  • Maintain a safe working environment by complying with safety procedures, rules and regulations. 

  • Adhere and adapt to client goals, and standards of performance, policies and procedures. 

  • Adhere to NDIS compliance requirements

  • Complete support plans in a timely manner with client
Key Performance Indicators
  • Able to manage own time and prioritise competing demands to ensure completion of clinical and client responsibilities 

  • Practice high level of professional child/adult caseload clinical skills

  • Maintain professional expertise through professional development initiatives, conferences and literature. 

  • Actively participates in regular peer and clinical supervision

  • Complete an annual staff performance appraisal as per Policy

  • Consistent positive professional communication and consultation with relevant internal and external stakeholders 

  • Seeks out new referrals through existing and potential partnerships

  • Promotes the organisation at appropriate forums

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

  •  Bachelor’s degree or Masters in Speech Pathology 

  • We are looking for experienced clinicians (at least two years in profession) or early career clinicians who have relevant prior experience (e.g. working in disability sector).

  • A passion and understanding of person-centred, evidence-based practice 

  • A desire to help deliver services to rural Australia 

  • Demonstration of ability to work independently 

All staff must have:

  • Australian Business Number

  • Certified Practising Membership with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA)

  • Current Working with Children Check (renewed every 3 years) 

  • National Police Clearance (renewed every 5 years)

  • Current professional indemnity and public liability insurance, or ability to obtain before commencing work (min $5m)

  • NDIS Worker Screening Check

  • Medicare Provider Number

Highly Desirable

  • Previous experience delivering online therapy 

  • Experience working with clients with complex needs 

  • Training and experience in swallowing and feeding 

  • Experience working within the NDIS 

  • Experience living or working in rural settings
