Enrolled Nurse
Purpose and Mission
Enrolled nurses, like practice nurses, play a vital role in supporting the healthcare team in hospitals, clinics, and doctor’s offices. They assist in reducing the workload of registered nurses and general practitioners, and help ensure that patients receive timely access to care.
Enrolled nurses also provide support and education to patients on lifestyle-related health issues, such as smoking cessation, alcohol moderation, nutrition, and chronic disease management, though their scope of practice is more limited compared to registered nurses.
Reports To
Enrolled nurses typically report to a registered nurse or nursing supervisor. In private practice settings, they may report to the practice’s lead registered nurse or the general practitioner, depending on the practice structure.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Enrolled nurses generally have limited supervisory responsibilities. They often work under the guidance of registered nurses and may assist in training and supporting new staff. Some enrolled nurses may choose to pursue further education to become registered nurses, thus expanding their roles and responsibilities.
Qualifications
Enrolled nurses are required to complete a diploma or equivalent qualification in nursing. While they do not hold the same level of responsibility as registered nurses, they are trained to provide essential care under the supervision of registered nurses. Enrolled nurses must also be registered with the appropriate regulatory body, such as AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency), to work directly with patients.
Responsibilities of an Enrolled Nurse
Enrolled nurses work alongside a team of healthcare professionals, including registered nurses, doctors, and other support staff. Their typical responsibilities include:
- Assisting with patient consultations in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and community health centers.
- Supporting physical examinations and assisting with routine tests and procedures.
- Providing care and support for patients with a range of illnesses and conditions.
- Helping with wound care, including applying and changing dressings.
- Providing basic first aid and emergency care under the guidance of a registered nurse or doctor.
- Educating patients on health issues and lifestyle changes, though often with a focus on following established care plans rather than independent counseling.
- Monitoring patient vital signs, such as pulse, temperature, and blood pressure.
- Assisting with the administration of medications and treatments as directed by a registered nurse.
- Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring that documentation is up-to-date.
While enrolled nurses work under the supervision of registered nurses and have a more focused role, they are integral to the healthcare team, providing essential support and care to patients.
