The Yarra Valley is the area around the upper regions of the Yarra River, about an hour north-east of Melbourne. The main towns in the Yarra Valley are Healesville, Warburton and Yarra Glen. Beyond the Yarra Valley is the High Country – the name often given to the region that includes the Victorian Alps, and comprises the Bogong High Plains, Bowen Range, Cathedral Range and other smaller ranges.
The Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s most famous wine regions. Agriculture as well as tourism are a cornerstone of the local economy. The High Country is home to many ski resorts and this activity and tourism – particularly ecotourism – are also big industries in the region, as well agriculture. Towns in this region include Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.
The population of the Yarra Ranges Shire that takes in the Yarra Valley is around 144,54. There are primary schools in the towns, with a high school at Healesville. The Alpine Shire has a population of around 11,881 people. Public P-12 schools exist at Bright and Myrtleford while Mount Beauty has separate primary and secondary schools. Throughout the greater region you will find sporting facilities and leisure activities. The Yarra Valley in particular is a hub of cultural activity that you’d expect from a major wine region.
Healthcare Jobs and Medical Careers in Yarra Valley and the High Country, VIC
The Healesville Hospital is a small hospital that services an area of around 2000 square kilometres. In early 2017, an $8.8 million upgrade to the hospital that is allowing it to deliver new services such as an operating theatre and renal dialysis unit. In the High Country, health services are delivered by Alpine Health at three sites, including acute health, community health and community and aged residential services.
Two Primary Health Networks (PHNs) support health professionals in these regions – the Eastern Melbourne PHN and Murray PHN. Support networks for this region include indigenous, maternal health, diabetes management, immunisation, mental health and alcohol and other drugs.
The median house price in Healesville is more affordable than Melbourne at $480,000 while the average rent is $370 per week. In Bright the median house price is $177,500 and average weekly rent is $330.
Getting to the Yarra Valley is less than an hour by car from Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway. Public Transport Victoria runs regular trains from Lilydale Station where you can take a bus to Yarra Glen, Healesville or Warburton. Bright in the High Country is approximately 3.5 hours by car from Melbourne. You can also get there by catching a train to Wangaratta and then a connecting bus.
