Whyalla & Eyre Peninsula

Living and working in Whyalla & Eyre Peninsula SA

The far-flung, straw-coloured Eyre Peninsula is a Mecca for seafood lovers– The ‘seafood frontier’ of Australia. More than 65% of the nation’s seafood comes from these waters, including green-lipped abalone, scallops, prawns, oysters and tuna. Naturally, here, you get to enjoy succulent seafood fresh off the pristine waters. This is a place of extreme natural beauty, with a multitude of landscapes, sublime national parks, world-class surf breaks and adventure in the seas– on offer are swims with dolphins and sea lions, cage dives with great white sharks and intimate whale watching cruises.

Bounded on the east by the Spencer Gulf, the west by the Great Australian Bight, and the north by the Gawler Ranges, the Eyre Peninsula covers a 170,500 sq.km. area or 17.3% of SA’s land mass. The peninsula has a population of 58,700 people. The seaside city of Whyalla is the north-eastern gateway to the Peninsula. Its proud industrial history and natural wonders, including the annual spawning of giant luminescent cuttlefish, has made it a popular tourist spot.

The regional economy is primarily driven by well-established agriculture, manufacturing, fishing, tourism and mining industries. Aquaculture, food, renewable energy, healthcare and community services are rapidly developing as major employment and revenue sources. Campuses for TAFE SA, the University of South Australia and Flinders University are located throughout the region.

The Eyre Peninsula is serviced by three airports– Port Lincoln, Ceduna and Whyalla– offering daily flights to and from Adelaide. Driving from Adelaide to Whyalla takes about five hours. A self-drive trail called the Seafood Frontier provides a gastronomic journey along the coastline to experience the best fresh seafood. Touring the inland reveals wonderous natural playgrounds of ancient geological formations, expansive salt lakes, and native wildlife – kangaroos, emus, eagles and other rare native fauna – in huge numbers.

Living in the Eyre Peninsula offers a fantastic opportunity to escape the fast-paced city life. The median house price of $265,000 and weekly rent of $180 is below the State’s average. The idyllic towns, friendly locals, wildlife, walking trails, fishing, diving and some of the world’s most picturesque beaches make it a delightful region to live in.
