Health care and social assistance, construction and the retail trade sectors are the biggest employers in the region.
The city of Maroochydore, with a population of around 48,000 is the largest in the region. The Sunshine Coast has its own university – University of Sunshine Coast, with a campus located at Sippy Downs, 30 minutes away. Maroochydore has great primary and high schools. There are excellent sporting facilities and a thriving arts scene that includes the Maroochydore Music and Visual Arts Festival.
It’s very easy to get to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane. It’s about a 90 minute drive by car. There are regular train services between the two areas as well. The Sunshine Coast airport at Marcoola has daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne.

A new $1.8 billion tertiary teaching hospital is being built at Birtinya, will open in April 2017 with 450 beds, increasing to 783 beds from 2021. The Sunshine Coast Hospital currently has 110 beds and the recently opened Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital has 200. There are three other smaller public hospitals in the Sunshine Coast area, and several private hospitals. Health care and social assistance is the biggest employer in the Sunshine Coast accounting for 15.7% of the region’s jobs.
The Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network (PHN) supports health professionals in the Sunshine Coast. Support networks in the region include Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander health, aged care, disability care, cancer screening, domestic violence, cardiac rehabilitation and women’s health.
Housing in the Sunshine Coast is not as affordable as other regional areas of Queensland. In Maroochydore the median house price is $527,550. Rents in Maroochydore are an average of $470 per week. In Noosa Heads the median house price is $855,000. While in Caloundra it is $535,000. The most affluent suburbs are Birtinya, which has the highest median income, followed by Alexandra Headland, Mons, Sunshine Beach and Coochin Creek.
