Radiologists are doctors who are specialists in interpreting diagnostic imaging tests or treatments involving the use of X-rays, ultrasound, and other scanning techniques. Radiologists generally work closely with general practitioners and other experts to diagnose medical problems or symptoms based internal images of your body.

Nuclear / PET (positron emission tomography) radiologists use radioactive material to create images of the function of organs or other systems. These techniques assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, heart disease and infections. Nuclear medicine involves intravenous injections of radioisotopes or tracers. These tagged molecules produce a tiny amount of radiation, which can be detected over time to produce a series of images.

Diagnostic nuclear medicine can assess both organ structure and function allowing for earlier detection and diagnosis of diseases. For each type of test, a specific chemical compound is tagged with a radio tracer, giving each type of exam sensitivity and specificity for particular diseases.

Nuclear scans are useful in determining kidney function, visualizing heart flow and function, checking the lungs for respiratory and blood flow issues, evaluating bones for fractures, infections, growths or arthritis, as well as detecting, diagnosing and monitoring certain many cancers.
