Mt Isa is the commercial centre of a vast area of Western Queensland. The region extends north towards the Carpentaria Coast and south towards the Simpson Desert. Other major towns in the district include Cloncurry, Boulia, Camooweal and Burketown. Mt Isa is 1,800 kilometres from Brisbane.
The city is home to one of the top ten producers of lead, copper, silver and zinc in the world. It also has one of Australia’s two largest copper mining and smelter operations. An estimated 22,000 people call Mt Isa home. There’s a campus of James Cook University situated in the city, and there are several public and private schools for primary and secondary students. It is home to the Mt Isa School of the Air providing distance learning options to students in remote parts of the state’s west. A range of sporting and leisure facilities as well as cultural experiences through art galleries, museums and a program of performances can be found in the city.
The Mt Isa Base Hospital has had a $65.19 million redevelopment in recent years. This includes a new regional cancer centre to improve cancer services in Queensland’s north-west. Mt Isa is also home to James Cook University’s Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health – a Commonwealth government initiative to help develop workforce capacity in rural, remote and indigenous population health.
The easiest way to get to Mt Isa is via air. There are direct flights to the city from Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Darwin and the Gold Coast. Queensland Rail operates a passenger service twice a week connecting Mt Isa with Townsville. All the major highways that run to Mt Isa are sealed, but getting there might take you a while – it’s around a 19-and-a-half hour drive from Brisbane with no stops.
