With a population of round 4,531,636, Melbourne is by far Victoria’s most populous city. Healthcare and social assistance is the biggest employment sector in the greater Melbourne area, accounting for 11.1 per cent of all jobs.

Three Primary Health Networks (PHNs) support health professionals in Melbourne – North Western Melbourne PHN, Eastern Melbourne PHN and South Eastern Melbourne PHN. Support networks exist for many health concerns such as indigenous, maternal health, diabetes, aged care, disability, alcohol and drugs and mental health.

Melbourne house prices are among some of the highest in Australia.  The median house price in the city is $826,000 while the median weekly rent is $390. More affordable housing exists in fringe areas of the city, such as Melton where the median house price is $295,000 or Brookfield where the median price is $366,000. The most affluent areas in Melbourne are Toorak, Brighton, South Yarra, Prahran, Malvern, Hawthorn, Canterbury and Camberwell.

Melbourne is served by an international airport and rail links to Victoria’s major regional centres such as Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland. Public transport throughout Melbourne is plentiful and includes trains, buses and the iconic Melbourne tram system.
