Purpose and Mission

Healthcare management are the leadership responsible for the overall management of hospitals, clinics, hospital networks and healthcare systems. This includes the management of medical centres, pathology clinics and other types of healthcare centres. Healthcare managers are involved in the implementation of healthcare policies, managing budgets and accounts, implementing programs and services, building and maintaining relationships with other organisations and other duties.

Healthcare administrators are responsible for the management of staff, consultants and vendors. They act as the central point of contact within hospitals and may be clinicians or individuals with other specialities within the healthcare sector. Healthcare administrators lead hospitals, medical practices, nursing care facilities and a variety of health agencies.

Healthcare managers and administrators work in the public sector in national, state and local health agencies, and also in the private sector at pharmaceutical companies, health insurance providers, biotechnology companies, health information technology firms, consulting firms and companies that make medical equipment and supplies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Healthcare managers and administrators all have significant supervisory responsibilities, some for just a few employees, others for an entire clinic or hospital.

Qualifications

Qualifications for healthcare administrators vary by position, but a college degree is required for most positions. Senior healthcare management positions typically require a graduate degree in health management or an MD.

Registration

Depending on the role, healthcare administrators and managers may need to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and/or the appropriate supporting National Boards of Australia.

Responsibilities of Healthcare Managers and Administrators

There are numerous career options within the healthcare management and administration field:

  • Director
  • Facility Manager
  • Practice Manager
  • Unit Manager
  • Patients Services Manager
  • Administration
  • Office Manager
  • Medical Receptionist
  • Medical Clerks

Healthcare managers and administrators need exemplary leadership skills within multidisciplinary frameworks. They also need highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills with the proven ability to manage staff and finances. These modern healthcare professionals must be adaptable to change working in a fast-paced environment with constant new developments in healthcare law, policies and technology.

By the same token, healthcare managers and administrators must be analytical, organised, creative and flexible because they work in constantly evolving environments. These supervisory positions require strong communications skills and the ability to communicate with people at all levels. Keep in mind that healthcare managers and administrators are the “face” of the organisation, so individuals in these positions must be calm and always maintain professionalism.
