The Central Coast is the tantalizing strip bridging the region between Sydney and Newcastle. Located on the Tasman Sea coast north of Sydney, the area extends between the mouth of the Hawkesbury River, stretching all the way to the southern end of Lake Macquarie, and the Watagan Mountains in the west. With an array of bays, beaches, inlets, lakes and hinterland areas, the Central Coast, offers all the delights of an idyllic coastal locale.
For thousands of years, this region was inhabited by Aboriginal people of the Guringai and Darkinjung tribes. They were some of the first to come in contact with British settlers. Currently, the Central Coast is a peri-urban region with an estimated population of 325,082. It is reputed to be the third largest populated area in New South Wales, and the ninth largest in Australia. The primary urban cluster of the region is wrapped around the northern shore of Brisbane Water and includes the Coast’s largest population centre, Gosford. Large numbers of people residing in the southern part of the region commute to Sydney for work, on a daily basis.
The Central Coast has a resilient economy and the significant employment sectors include services, tourism, manufacturing, finance, building, retail and industrial. Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest employer, generating 12,972 jobs. The area offers good avenues for education and personal development. A campus of the University of Newcastle is located at Ourimbah. There are three campuses of the Hunter Institute of TAFE, and one of them is located at Gosford.

Hunter New England and Central Coast, is the Primary Health Network (PHN) for the area. The Central Coast has two large public hospitals with well-equipped emergency departments, and the Gosford Hospital is the largest. Gosford Private Hospital located at North Gosford is the largest private hospital on the Central Coast. The region also offers 21 aged care facilities and seven ambulance stations of the Ambulance Service of NSW.
The Central Coast Council area is very well connected with a network of roadways. It is served by the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway, the Pacific Motorway, the Central Coast Highway and the Pacific Highway. Other modes of transport include the Sydney-Newcastle railway line and Warnervale Airport for links to all major cities.
With median housing prices of $566,210 in 2016, Central Coast is only moderately affordable. And Gosford with median weekly renting costs of $275, makes for a laidback suburban alternative to living in a metro.
