If you’re looking to make a change to an area with a great lifestyle, but also has a strong and dynamic economy, Gladstone is worth checking out.

The Gladstone region in Central Queensland covers around 10,500 square kilometres and is located approximately 550 kilometres north of Brisbane, and about 100 kilometres south-east of Rockhampton. The region is the gateway to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. While Gladstone is the biggest centre in the region, there are dozens of smaller towns there as well.

Gladstone is an industrial city. It is home to two of the world’s largest alumina refineries as well as Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port. Many other major industrial companies are based here and the city is known for employment opportunities and its skilled workforce. The economic outlook here is strong as large industry continues to be attracted to the region. Manufacturing, construction and retail trade are the three biggest industries for employment.

The city of Gladstone itself has a population of around 63,000. Two universities have campuses here, and there are many good primary and secondary schools, both public and private. Sport is extremely popular in Gladstone, with many sporting clubs served by excellent facilities. There are also art galleries, museums and a thriving arts community.

Gladstone has a public hospital as well as a private hospital. The healthcare sector in the region is the seventh largest employer, accounting for 6.57 per cent of local jobs.

There’s a few different ways to get to Gladstone. By road it’s around a 6 hour drive from Brisbane via the Bruce Highway. It’s about five-and-a-half hours south of Mackay and an hour south of Rockhampton. Gladstone has a regional airport with several flights a day to Brisbane. Queensland Rail’s Tilt Train also links the city with Brisbane and other towns.

Housing is more affordable in Gladstone than in other parts of Queensland, with a median house price of $297,500. The median house rental price in Gladstone is $200 per week, much lower than the average of $380 per week for Queensland.  The most affluent suburbs in Gladstone are Gladstone Central, which has the highest median income, followed by West Gladstone, South Gladstone, Barney Point and Callemondah.
