A dual diagnosis psychiatrist treats individuals who are suffering a mental illness and a substance abuse problem at the same time. Dual diagnosis is an extremely broad category. It can range from mild depression related to binge drinking, to symptoms of bipolar disorder becoming severe when an individual abuses heroin during manic phases.
Responsibilities of a dual diagnosis psychiatrist include mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment and crisis intervention. He or she will work closely with the primary physician, psychiatric and other health professionals to plan and manage a treatment program. He or she also consults with psychiatrists, allied health professionals, and others during psychological and neuropsychological assessment of patients.
