Situated on Queensland’s sub-tropical coast, the region is around four hours’ drive north of Brisbane. The region covers an area of 45,811 kilometres including the main towns of Bundaberg, Maryborough, Gympie and Hervey Bay. It’s also home to renowned destinations such as Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef.
The main employment industries in the Wide Bay-Burnett region are healthcare and social assistance, retail and agriculture. The economy of the region is not without its challenges and experiences the ups and downs associated with reliance on agriculture. However the area is expected to experience a large population boost over the next two decades.
Bundaberg itself has a population of around 70,000 people. It has a university campus (there are another two in the region itself) and high quality primary and high schools that also have links to local industries. Some 22 hospitals, public and private, large and small, service the Bundaberg and Wide Bay-Burnett region – three of them are in Bundaberg itself. The healthcare and social assistance sector is the largest employer accounting for 14.9 per cent of the region’s jobs.
The Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network (PHN) supports health professionals in the Bundaberg and Wide Bay-Burnett region. Support networks in the region include Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander health, aged care, disability care, cancer screening, domestic violence, cardiac rehabilitation and women’s health.
Some of the most affordable housing in Queensland can be found in the region, which is the next major coastal growth corridor north of the Sunshine Coast. Median house prices in Maryborough are $202,000, while in Gympie the median price is $230,000 and in Bundaberg it’s $260,000. You can rent here for around $300 a week. The most popular and affluent suburbs in Bundaberg are Ashfield, which has the highest median income, followed by Qunaba, Gooburrum, Isis Central and Coral Cove.
