Ballarat & Central Highlands

Living in and working in Ballarat and the Central Highlands, Victoria

If you’re looking for a tree-change but still within 90 minutes of a thriving metropolis, then look no further than Ballarat and the Central Highlands region.

Covering almost 14,000 square kilometres, the Central Highlands region of central western Victoria stretches from the western boundary of Melbourne to the Great Dividing Range and Grampians.

This vibrant region has experienced significant economic growth over the past decade, with progress predicted to continue as regional developers capitalise on the region’s close proximity to Melbourne.

Ballarat, the hub of the Central Highlands, is the largest inland city in Victoria with a population of just over 100,000. Ballarat boasts four universities, high-achieving government and non-government schools, lively arts and cultural heritage district and a range of recreational and sporting facilities.

Healthcare Jobs and Medical Careers in Ballarat and the Central Highlands, Victoria

There are three large teaching hospitals and comprehensive health facilities throughout the city, yet Ballarat has developed a blueprint for health industry growth. The Central Highlands Regional Growth Plan includes an integrated proposal for a Health and Knowledge precinct in Ballarat to support the growing population and provide the health and community services sector with state-of-the-art facilities. This sector is the largest employer in the Central Highlands region with over 17% of jobs dedicated to health and community services. And with the ageing population the industry is expanding.

Health professionals in the Central Highlands region are supported by the Western Victoria Primary Health Network (PHN). Healthcare support networks available in this region include aged care and disability services, youth outreach, child and adolescent mental health services, family and domestic violence support groups, multicultural services for non-English speaking residents and an indigenous health facility, Baarlinjan Clinic, run by the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative (BADAC).

Affordable housing is a definite drawcard to the Central Highlands region. Median house prices in the historic town of Ararat, just over 2 hours from Melbourne, are around $200,000 while in Ballarat median house prices are $304,000. You can rent for around $275 per week.  The most popular and affluent suburbs of Ballarat include Lake Wendouree with a highly educated and mostly professional population, followed by Ballarat Central, Alfredton and Soldiers Hill.

It’s easy to get to the Central Highlands. Four rail corridors link the region to Adelaide, Melbourne, Geelong and Mildura and five major highways connect cities and agricultural centres, winding through mid-size towns, small hamlets and world-class tourist destinations including the spa-towns of Daylesford and Hepburn and the Pyrenees wine region.
