ABOUT ME
Dr Stuart Kostalas BM (Hons1), FRACP
Dr Stuart Kostalas graduated with first class honours in Medicine and subsequently undertook his physicians training in gastroenterology and hepatology across a variety of hospitals in Sydney, NSW. More importantly he has continued to train at leading centres all over the world (Japan, France, USA, Vienna, and Amsterdam). He regularly travels overseas to train with international experts, to refine his endoscopic and clinical knowledge, making sure his skills and knowledge are both current and relevant. In February 2017 he hosted and performed advanced endoscopic procedures with Prof Noriya Uedo in Port Macquarie.
Dr Kostalas is interested and experienced in the breadth of luminal gastroenterology; all aspects of endoscopy (including advanced endoscopic procedures), the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease and preventing bowel cancer (colorectal cancer screening). Stuart has a particular interest in hepatology; especially viral hepatitis management, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, non-invasive markers of liver dysfunction and the management of end stage liver disease.
Dr Kostalas is actively involved in clincal research and teaching. During his career he has won numerous teaching awards including the “Dean’s award for excellence in teaching” twice. Dr Kostalas was nominated for the "Brian Yeo Best Teacher Award" at the University of New South Wales in 2012. In the same year he won the Wiley Blackwell Publishing Award for "Clinical Excellence in Adult Medicine" from the Royal Australasian College of Physicans.
Dr Kostalas pursues current evidenced based practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has completed a masters in medicine, providing him with deeper insight into the application of evidence to clinical practice. As part of his commitment to ongoing learning and the pursuit of best practice he is a member of:
- The American Gastroenterology Association (AGA),
- The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG),
- The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE),
- The American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD)
- European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
- European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and the
- European Crohn´s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO)
He also regularly attends international and national education events. Dr Kostalas is a (Conjoint) Lecturer University of New South Wales. Dr Kostalas is a regional examiner for the Royal Australiasian College of Physicians specialist exams, assessing "specialists in training". He is the Gastroenterology representative on the Medical Advisory Committee at Port Macquarie Private Hospital, served as a working group member on the NSW scope of clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is the primary supervisor of Gastroenterology Advanced Trainees at Port Macquarie.
Dr Kostalas enjoys spending time with his wife, three young children (and multiple pets), participating in sporting events and mountain bike riding. He looks forward to delivering the best medical care to you and your family.
