Assessment & Diagnosis

To ensure that you have a clear understanding of your child’s skills the following comprehensive assessments may be required.

  • Articulation or Speech Assessment – this is generally performed by
  • Administration of a formal test which measures what sounds your child can /cannot produce
  • Recording of your child’s conversational speech to be further analysed
  • Oral Language Assessment – conducted with
  • The use of nationally accepted standardised test/s
  • analysis of conversation / monologue in terms of structure and sequence
  • Pragmatic language skills – the use of language in a social context
  • Voice – analysis of the tone, pitch and quality of voice use
  • Stuttering – the evaluation of speech fluency and the level of disruption caused by stuttering behaviours such as repetition, elongation, blocking etc
  • Learning Difficulties – skills such as phonological awareness (ability to recognise and manipulate sounds within words) will be analysed.

    • The assessment will include the following:

    • Discussion of the case history information that you have already provided which will take approximately 10 minutes
    • Assessment session – administration of appropriate assessment tools which may take between 30 – 90 minutes. Parents will be invited to observe the assessment
    • Analysis of the assessment material will occur prior to the following feedback session
    • Feedback session with the parents within one week to fully and clearly explain the results and discuss the recommended next steps which may include the intervention plan, additional assessment required or referral to an appropriate alternative professional.
      This session will take approximately 30minutes
    • Provision of a written report outlining the results in readily understood language will be provided on request for an additional fee. This report can be used to provide information to other health professionals, schools and preschools. It may also be used to demonstrate eligibility for additional funding and supports within educational contexts.

    With your permission we will seek to add any additional information from other sources such as teachers, medical professionals, psychologists, occupational therapists, audiologists and the like to ensure that all relevant and appropriate material is added to the eventual diagnosis and outcome.
