What is Psychology?
Psychology is an allied health division whereby therapists assist their clients to experience meaningful and fulfilling lives. It is a regulated profession with a minimum requirement of 6 years university education and supervised practical training.
What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist?
A psychologist usually has a 4 year psychology degree and at least 2 years practical training. A clinical psychologist usually has a 4 year psychology degree, a 2 year Master of Psychology, and at least 12 months practical training.
The Australian Psychology Society states:
“Psychologists are experts in human behaviour, having studied the brain, memory, learning, human development, and the processes determining how people think, feel, behave and react.”
We are trained to understand emotions and behaviour and help you enhance your coping strategies, reduce distress and improve your wellbeing.
Are psychologists the same as psychiatrists?
No. We are not psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health disorders that require medical management.
How does a Clinical Psychologist Registrar differ from a Clinical Psychologist?
The registrar program is a period of advanced supervised practice between the completion of the Master of Psychology and full endorsement as a clinical psychologist. This period involves completing requirements set by the Psychology Board of Australia.
Current requirements of the Registrar program involve completing two years full time practice, 3080 hours of psychological practice, 80 hours of supervision (consultation with a clinical psychologist supervisor), and 80 hours of active professional development.
Only after these conditions have been completed and approved by the Board, may full endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist be given.
How do you access Psychology services?
- You can self-refer to psychological services. Therapy may be rebated by your private health insurance.
- If you see your GP first, you can be referred for certain conditions under a Mental Health Care Plan. If you are referred under this Plan, Medicare offers rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year (see Treatment).
