Profile Summary
Dr Riaan Foot was born and raised in Cape
Town, South Africa. He completed his
undergraduate dental training at the
University of Stellenbosch and it was during
his time as a student, whilst treating
orthodontic patients in the student clinic,
that he discovered a passion for
orthodontics. He realised that the
discipline of orthodontics had immense
power, not only to improve smiles, but also
to transform the lives of patients. He
gained tremendous satisfaction from seeing
the improvement in confidence and self
esteem in young patients, following
treatment and this inspired him to pursue a
career in orthodontics.
Following graduation, Riaan worked in a busy
private family dental practice. He also
enrolled and completed a Postgraduate
Diploma in Interceptive Orthodontics at the
University of the Western Cape.
After relocating to Australia he completed
the primary examinations to the Royal
Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and
the final examinations of the Australian
Dental Council granting him full Dental
Board registration.
Riaan was subsequently accepted into
specialist Orthodontic training program at
the University of Sydney, completing the
three year full time specialist training
course, Doctor of Clinical Dentistry
(Orthodontics).
During his time has a student, Riaan
received the prize for the best treated
student case at the Australian Society of
Orthodontics (NSW) clinical day. He has also
been awarded Membership to the Royal
Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.
Riaan has been fortunate enough to lecture
both in Australia and abroad and was invited
to join the University of Sydney faculty on
a part time basis, following graduation,
where he tutors and lectures to postgraduate
specialist students.
He is currently a member of the Australian
Society of Orthodontists, Australian
Orthodontic Board and the World Federation
of Orthodontists.
Riaan’s special interests include the use of
Temporary anchorage devices to expedite
treatment results, dentofacial orthopaedics
and aesthetic adult treatment modalities.
