Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year over 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer, and two in three Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 70. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia - and it can be almost entirely prevented with good sun protection.
Established in 1988, SunSmart is one of the longest running - and most successful - skin cancer prevention programs in the world. We are proud that our work has resulted in melanoma rates declining or stabilising in all age groups under 60 in Victoria.
Jointly funded by Cancer Council Victoria and the Victorian Government, we are famous for our Slip! Slop! Slap! catch-cry, which has expanded to include Seek (shade) and Slide (on sunglasses). In recognition of our work, Cancer Council Victoria has been designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Centre for Ultraviolet Radiation since 2004.
