The AUSTRALASIAN ASSOCIATION FOR CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE was founded in 1961 and its objectives are as follows:

to advance the study and practice of clinical biochemistry and associated
laboratory medicine;
to disseminate knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical
biochemistry and laboratory medicine; and
to protect and promote the interests professionals working in laboratory medicine.
In 1967 these objectives were further expanded by the decision to incorporate the Association, revise the Constitution and widen the scope for the Association's work to include professional as well as scientific activities. By the granting of professional qualifications the Association aims to encourage highly trained chemists to enter the field of clinical chemistry and further to encourage those already engaged in this field to pursue advanced studies so as to more effectively render service to the public. The Association is not a registered industrial body.

In 2019 the Association again revised the Constitution and changed its name to Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Incorporated

The members of the Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine are organised into Branches. Each Branch has a voice in the federal organisation through its elected representative to the Council of the Association. The Council is composed of the Officers of the Association (President, President-elect or Past President, four Vice Presidents & Chief Executive Officer), the seven Branch Representatives, the Chair of the Board of Examiners, and the Managing Director, (or delegate) of AACB Services Pty Ltd. The President currently holds the position of National Representative to IFCC. The Chair of the Central Conference Organising Committee is a co-opted member of Council.

Officers of the Association (President and Vice Presidents) are elected by a ballot from candidates who are each nominated by two other members of the Association. All Councillors (with the exception of the Chief Executive Officer) and Branch Officers act in an honorary capacity.

The Council formulates policy in accordance with the Association's Constitution and its decisions are reported to the membership at the Annual General Meeting.
Why us
AACB activities are coordinated at a Branch level by a committee, which organises regular meetings and educational programs. These provide a venue for a variety of presentations, which include original scientific work and educational material from both local and invited speakers. The impetus for these activities comes mainly from the Branch Committee, but the calendar of Branch events also includes those which are organised on a national basis. Activities coordinated at a national level include; the Current Concepts Internet Broadcast, the annual Roman Travelling Lectures, which may be either an international or an Australian lecturer, the annual education course organised in association with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA), and various specialist meetings and advanced workshops. These may take the form of Scientific Education Seminars organised by the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Committee.

The Annual Scientific Conference is the highlight of the AACB meetings calendar. In addition to providing an opportunity for the presentation of original scientific work, either as oral papers or posters, there are all day Updates (QC & Management), clinical case sessions, symposia and plenary lectures, including the David Curnow Plenary Lecture. A major industry display is normally one of the attractions at the conference. The Annual General Meeting of the Association takes place during the Annual Scientific Conference.
