About us
Dietitians Australia is the leading voice in nutrition and dietetics in Australia.
Our mission is to champion the professional nutrition and dietetic workforce to empower people and communities.
We help build healthier communities by communicating credible and timely nutrition messages to the public. Through advocacy, we campaign for healthy food systems that are accessible for Australians. We also work to foster world-class research to support evidence-based practice.
What we do
Dietitians Australia is the peak industry body for dietetic and nutrition professionals, representing over 8000 members in Australia and overseas.
Our mission is to champion the professional nutrition and dietetic workforce to empower people and communities.
We're the leading voice of the dietetics and nutrition profession.
Check out our annual report for specifics on what we do. Or read our strategic plan to understand our focus areas for the association.
A strong member community
Founded in 1976 as the Australian Association of Dietetics, Dietitians Australia has grown into an inspiring and dynamic association that supports members with:
continuing professional development
access to publications and research
networking opportunities
awards and recognition
Want to know more about becoming a member? View our membership benefits.
Maintaining professional standards
We manage the regulatory and credentialing aspects of the profession. Including the accreditation of university programs and the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential.
APDs are Australia’s leaders in nutrition, equipped with the skills to provide personalised and evidence-based nutrition advice and support.
In a world of false claims and unfounded nutritional advice, Australians can be confident the advice they receive from an APD is solid and dependable.
APDs are the only recognised nutrition professionals able to provide dietetic services under:
Medicare
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs
most private health funds
Want trusted nutrition advice? Find a dietitian.
Influencing health policy
We advocate on public health nutrition issues to ensure all Australians get sound advice.
Our aim is to improve nutritional health across the country and give expert advice to support the health of all Australians.
We work with the government, agencies, and other bodies to influence health policy. We represent our APDs and support their work in helping Australians become healthier.
We also work to raise the profile of the industry through our media and communications activities.
What is reconciliation?
Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples and non-Indigenous peoples. This will benefit all Australians.
Our commitment
We support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members and members of all cultures.
We're committed to cultural understanding and knowledge among our members and staff.
It’s now more important than ever that we take action and work towards a more equal, respectful and just society.
We hope to empower other organisations to join our commitment to reconciliation, which we're implementing through our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and Working Group (RAPWG).
Dietitians Australia and the RAPWG accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to build a better future. Dietitians Australia fully supports the recommendation for a First Nations Voice to be enshrined in the constitution. Read the full statement.
Our reconciliation journey
In 2013, our Board asked the Indigenous Nutrition Interest Group (INIG) to look into a reconciliation plan.
The INIG identified the need for a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The plan would formalise our commitment to reconciliation and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
We then formed our RAP Working Group (RAPWG). This launched our reconciliation journey. The Working Group includes 3 Aboriginal members, 6 non-Indigenous members and 1 staff member.
Our journey has included both big and small contributions to reconciliation efforts. Reconciliation is now an integral part of our organisation.
