Company History
Following a distinguished academic and scientific publishing career, James McKeen Cattell, Ph.D., established The Psychological Corporation in New York City in 1921. Dr. Cattell was a former president of the American Psychological Association (APA), the first psychologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and founder and editor of Scientific Monthly. Two of his former graduate students from Columbia University, Robert Sessions Woodworth and Edward Lee Thorndike, leading psychologists in their own right, were co-founders of the Corporation.
Dr. Cattell's vision for The Psychological Corporation was to develop psychological tests and materials for practising psychologists and to publish individualised psychological assessments such as David Wechsler's Wechsler Intelligence Scales. His plan was to form a holding company and referral service for psychologists, giving them shares of stock in exchange for their willingness to administer individual intelligence tests and promote the research and development of applied psychology. Half of the fees the psychologists received were to be put toward psychological research.
So great was Dr. Cattell's influence that he was able to recruit almost half of the 400 APA members for his corporation. Dr. Cattell served as president of The Psychological Corporation until late 1926, when he was named Chairman of the Board and replaced as president by Walter Van Dyke Bingham, a psychologist with more than 10 years of experience in industrial psychology.
In 1960, two large textbook and educational test publishing companies, Harcourt Brace & Company and World Book Company, merged to become Harcourt Brace & World (HB&W, later known as Harcourt Brace Jovanovich). In 1970, this firm purchased The Psychological Corporation, merging the HB&W testing division into the newly acquired company.
In July 2001, The Psychological Corporation was acquired by Reed Elsevier plc, one of the world's leading publishers and information providers in the Education, Science, Technology and Medical markets through its ownership of well-known brands such as Rigby, Heinemann, Elsevier Science and ScienceDirect.com.
In late-2003, the company changed its name to Harcourt Assessment, and then in 2008, Harcourt Assessment was acquired by the Pearson Group, creating one of the most comprehensive assessment and information organisations in the industry.
One thing that has never changed is that for close to 20 years, we have been operating in Australia and New Zealand to help educators and clinicians improve the lives of individuals of all ages by providing dedicated customer service and support for our clients.
