Our mission: Prevent cancer. Empower patients. Save lives.

Our values: Excellence. Integrity. Compassion.

Every year, more than 30,500 Victorians will be diagnosed with cancer, and nearly 11,000 will die from cancer. The number of cases will increase as our population grows and ages. Survival will also improve as we get better at early detection and treatment of cancer.

Since our establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for our innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, we play a leading role in reducing the impact of all cancers on all people.

Our role in creating change
Quality research underpins everything we do.
We are a trusted partner and our relationships with donors and partners maximise the impact of our work.
Our research-informed policies and programs deliver the biggest population impact in preventing and detecting cancer, empowering the community and reducing inequities.
Our staff, volunteers and supporters are vital to how we affect change; they enable us in everything we do.
Our strategy goals
We will reduce cancer deaths and improve quality of life for people living with cancer while empowering the community by leading and integrating research with our prevention, support and advocacy work.

Below are our goals and priorities for 2017-2021.

Prevention programs
We will implement powerful cancer prevention programs for major cancer risk factors: tobacco, UV, diet, obesity and alcohol.

We will:

Defend tobacco plain packaging litigation
Advocate for policy reform in tobacco, UV, diet, obesity, and alcohol
Lead implementation and evaluation of UV, tobacco and obesity cancer prevention communication campaigns
Investigate and evaluate policies and programs that prevent cancer
Build economic evaluation to identify and implement high value policies and programs
Screening and immunisation programs
We will mobilise community participation in cancer screening and immunisation programs.

We will:

Develop, implement and evaluate bowel cancer screening campaigns to increase participation
Encourage participation in evidence-based screening and immunisation programs, including among Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities
Information and support
We will empower patients by delivering dynamic, credible information and compassionate support.

We will:

Provide dynamic personalised support services
Promote optimal care pathways to improve the patient experience.
Develop and advocate for legal and policy changes to improve cancer outcomes
Investigate and evaluate policies and programs for people with cancer
Research and data
We will maximise the impact of cancer research and cancer data.

We will:

Conduct and fund quality cancer research
Generate accessible high quality cancer data through the Victorian Cancer Registry and linkages with other datasets
Increase investment for research into cancers with a high mortality rate
Build a high quality cancer research resource through the Australian Breakthrough Cancer cohort study
