About RANZCO
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) is the medical college responsible for the training and professional development of ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand. This includes maintaining a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system, a Vocational Training Program (VTP), organising scientific congresses and meetings, and much more.

Our mission is to lead eye care by setting and improving standards, providing lifelong education, promoting research and innovation and advocating on behalf of patients, their communities and our membership.

We are the leaders in collaborative eye care - focused on our commitment to:

Working with others involved in the delivery of eye health care nationally and internationally, including working with government and policy development; and
Providing best quality education, training and continuing professional development.
RANZCO has a three-year Strategic Plan 2021-2023, which aims to build on the College's successes to date while clearly articulating our vision, mission and strategic priorities.
Why us
RANZCO as a Higher Education Institution
RANZCO is accredited as a Specialist Medical College by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). The AMC collaborates with the MCNZ to develop standards for medical education and training in all phases of medical education. In its accreditation processes, it assesses education providers and their medical programs against these standards.

RANZCO submits annual reports to the AMC and the MCNZ who monitor the College Vocational Training Program (VTP) and Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD) as required by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law to ensure these programs continue to meet the approved accreditation standards.

The RANZCO Vocational Training Program is a five-year training program upon completion of which graduates are eligible to be admitted as Fellows of the College (FRANZCO).

RANZCO as a Learned Society
RANZCO supports the leadership role of ophthalmologists in influencing the factors that impact the eye health and wellbeing of patients, the broader community and the healthcare they receive. Advocacy activities are focussed on the improvement of the quality and safety of care for patients, and promoting eye healthcare in the community.

RANZCO and its membership work hard to improve eye care in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. Specifically, we seek to reduce avoidable blindness in the Asia-Pacific through the education and improvement of local training institutions that will, in turn, improve the eye health workforce through increased knowledge and expertise.

We work in collaboration with other stakeholders to ensure projects are sustainable and accessible to everyone, thereby seeking to contribute to the alleviation of poverty, improving gender equality, creating education opportunities and empowering local communities.
