Business / Provider Profile
The Rural Doctors Association (NSW), established in 1987, is one of seven state and Territory members of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia. RDA NSW is a non-profit organisation with our core business being to ensure the viability of working in the country for rural doctors by addressing the key industrial issues and advocating for health services to rural communities. Membership of RDA (NSW) is open to all NSW rural doctors, students, generalist and specialist, not just those who work at the 125 smaller rural hospitals in New South Wales.
With the co-operation of other stakeholders, RDA NSW is at the forefront in seeking solutions to the current rural workforce shortage. Activities range from those targeted towards high school students, through to GP retention grants including Anaesthetic and Obstetric Incentive Grants. These are in addition to CME/locum subsidies, Practice Incentive Payment bonuses, up-skilling grants of several thousand dollars, remote area recruitment grants for removal and set-up expenses. We work in collaboration with The Land newspaper who provides financial support to medical students through The Land Rural Medical Scholarship, while RDA NSW provide the mentoring each year for the scholarship recipients.
Advocacy & issues that RDA NSW is currently involved in include:
promoting Rural Generalism to medical students, interns, GPs
the need for more GP involvement in natural disasters and emergency planning
identified training issues
representation and meetings with Local Health Districts boards
representation and meetings with Public Health Network boards
more support required for doctors who work in hospitals
increased investment in primary health care as it is more cost effective and efficient than patients being seen in ED
more funding to implement the Rural Generalist Pathway
supervisor payments to remunerate GP VMOs who provide supervision
amendments to the current Metro Access Scholarship to reduce the inequity between metro and rural based JMOs.
supporting the Single Employer Model trial in the Murrumbidgee LHD
provide dispute resolution/assistance to members
assistance to practices to source PPE
consulting with NSW Health departments and quasi non-governmental organisations around development and review of policies and programs
