Trauma and Orthopaedics: Metastatic Bone Disease
Session Overview
Description
This session details the different types of metastatic bone disease, the treatment options available and when prophylactic surgical stabilisation may be indicated.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the different types of metastatic bone disease (MBD)
  • Describe the investigation and treatment options of MBD
  • Describe a scoring system that is used for deciding when to operate prophylactically in MBD

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • Metastatic cancer
  • Modalities in which to surgically treat fractures

Metastatic bone disease (MBD) refers to cancer that has begun in one organ and spread to bone. It is a far more common presentation than primary bone cancer.

MBD is a significant cause of pain and reduced quality of life in cancer patients.

This session describes how MBD presents, how it is diagnosed and how it can be treated.

The latter part of the session describes a scoring system which helps surgeons decide when to prophylactically operate on MBD.
