Surgery | Common Surgical Conditions | Peripheral Vascular Disease: Acute Limb Ischaemia
Peripheral Vascular Disease Acute Limb Ischaemia
Session Overview
Description
This session describes the presentation, aetiology and management of acute limb ischaemia.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain the aetiology and pathogenesis of acute limb ischaemia
- Assess patients with acute limb ischaemia
- Describe the imaging modalities available for acute limb ischemia
- Discuss the management options for acute limb ischaemia
- Describe how the severity of acute limb ischaemia can be assessed
- Recognise the complications of acute limb ischaemia
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- Knowledge of vascular anatomy expected of those who have passed MRCS part A
Acute limb ischaemia is defined as a sudden decrease in limb perfusion that causes a potential threat to the viability of a patient’s limb.
There are approximately 1.5 cases per 10 000 population per year [1](read details regarding the reference). With swift, appropriate surgical management, acute limb ischaemia is highly treatable but delay can lead to limb loss, disability, morbidity and mortality.
This session will cover the presentation diagnosis and management of acute limb ischaemia aimed at a core surgical trainee who is sitting their MRCS part B exam.
