Bleeding Disorders of Importance in Dentistry
Session Overview
Description
The session looks at the relevance of blood disorders to the delivery of dental care by the dental practitioner.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise patients with hematological problems
  • State the physiology of hematological problems
  • Discuss the pathology of important hematology disorders
  • Recognise how hematological problems may need addressing before dental treatment.

Dental practitioners need to be aware of the impact that blood disorders will have upon their daily practice. More and more patients are diagnosed with disorders of the blood and receive their care in the primary care.

There is a significant number of individuals who probably remain undiagnosed and, because of the nature of the dentist-patient relationship extending over long periods of time, signs and symptoms may be spotted by a Dental Practitioner.

This session will describe the signs and symptoms that may manifest in patients with blood disorders, the impact of hematological problems and the physiological mechanisms that need to understood providing treatment for these patients.
