This session identifies and describes the uses for the advanced imaging techniques that are available in dentistry.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe what advanced imaging devices and techniques are available
  • outline where these devices might be used in dentistry
  • compare these devices with conventional techniques

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have completed:

  • Appropriate imaging examination for a patient
  • Selection criteria for radiographic examination
  • Successful radiographic techniques

As technology advances, more advanced techniques to aid the diagnostic process and facilitate better treatment planning become available.

These include:

  • digital imaging
  • cone beam CT

Within medicine, there have been developments in:

  • conventional computed tomography (CT) i.e. spiral, multislice, dual energy
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • positron emission tomography (PET)
  • interventional sialography techniques

We will examine those techniques applicable to dentistry more closely, and also indicate where medical advancements are used in dentistry.
