Session overview
Description
This session outlines the role of the dental care professional with regards to child protection. It will enable you to identify signs of child maltreatment and dental neglect, and guide you through the procedure if you suspect that a child in your surgery is suffering from abuse/neglect.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the role the dental care professional has with regards to child protection
  • identify signs of child maltreatment
  • identify signs of dental neglect

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:

  • be aware of local child protection procedures

At least 1 child per 1,000 under 4 years of age suffers severe physical abuse each year in the UK.

In England and Wales an estimated 1 to 2 children die each week as a direct result of abuse or neglect.

Child maltreatment can impact on children’s health, growth and development.
