Description
This session explores the triggers, pathogenesis, presentation, clinical diagnosis and natural history of anaphylaxis, as well as the use of laboratory confirmatory markers.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State the causes of severe anaphylaxis
  • Describe the multiple cells, mediators and pathways implicated in the chain reaction response to what begins primarily as either an immunological or non-immunological response to an allergen
  • Describe the multi-system manifestations, variability in the presentation and respective frequency of presenting signs and symptoms
  • Explain the typical time course, the potential for rapid escalation to impending catastrophe and the potential for biphasic and protracted reactions
  • Describe the laboratory tests used to support the diagnosis and how to use them
  • Describe the treatments for anaphylaxis
