Session Overview
Description
This session will explore the aetiology and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) features seen in children with interstitial lung disease.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe HRCT appearances of interstitial lung disease in children
  • Suggest possible differential diagnoses

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have a basic understanding of the:

  • Technique of HRCT of the thorax
  • Anatomy of the secondary pulmonary lobule

The term 'interstitial lung disease' encompases a spectrum of disorders which characteristically cause:

  • Restrictive pulmonary function
  • Reduced gas exchange

The true incidence of interstitial lung disease in children is unknown but is rare, with small series and case reports being the basis of available knowledge. Presentation and progression of interstitial lung disease in children differs from that seen in adult patients.
