Thoracic Imaging Techniques
Session overview
Description
This session discusses the variety of imaging techniques used to diagnose paediatric chest problems, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of imaging techniques to paediatric thoracic problems
  • Evaluate strengths and limitations of different modalities
  • Describe appropriate imaging strategies for paediatric chest problems

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:

  • A basic understanding of paediatric chest disease
  • Knowledge of different imaging modalities available to the radiologist
  • An appreciation of the challenges involved with treating children

This session will give a brief introduction to the important techniques for imaging the paediatric chest, outlining their strengths and weaknesses.

The aim of this session is to simulate clinical experience of paediatric chest radiology, rather than give large amounts of reference material.

The session presents information as if you are in your departmental x-ray meeting reviewing films with clinical colleagues.

How to approach this session:

  • Consider the findings of each of the films
  • Think about the differential diagnosis
  • Consider further imaging possibilities and management implications
