Description
This session addresses the incidental ECG finding of a Brugada pattern. It includes the identification of ECG abnormalities, the implications of the finding and how to manage the patient.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the Brugada ECG pattern
  • State the clinical implications of the ECG findings
  • List the principles of management and investigation for a patient in the context of these incidental ECG findings
  • Explain the management of the Brugada patient in general

 

  • 4-12% of sudden deaths are attributable to Brugada syndrome and up to 20% of sudden deaths in individuals with structurally normal hearts
  • Syncope and cardiac arrest are the most common clinical manifestations leading to the diagnosis of Brugada syndrome
  • Brugada syndrome risk is greater in men than women
  • The data regarding the use of cardiac electrophysiology studies in risk stratification in patients with Brugada syndrome is conflicting
  • There is no completely effective drug treatment for preventing SCD in patients with Brugada syndrome
