Sexual Health | HPV infection, including HPV related neoplasia | VIN, PIN and VAIN
VIN, VaIN and PeIN
Session overview
Description
This session explores the diagnosis and management of squamous cell lesions of the vulva, vagina and penis.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain the general principles regarding aetiology, diagnosis and management of squamous cell lesions of the vulva, vagina and penis
- State the relation of these lesions to human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Explain the current classification of VIN, VaIN and PeIN
- Describe the specific considerations for vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN), penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) at each site
- Describe the management of VIN, VaIN and PeIN
- List the management options for SCC of the vulva, vagina and penis
- Recognise the potential for primary prevention, especially HPV vaccination
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the sessions:
- Module 01/Sexual History (260-0004)
- Module 01/Male Genital Examination (260-0009)
- Module 01/Female Genital Examination (260-0010)
- Module 05/Genital Lumps (260-0066)
- Module 05/Differential Diagnosis of Anogenital Warts (260-0067)
- Module 05/Anogenital Warts (260-0068)
- Module 05/Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) (260-0069)
- Module 05/Anal Squamous Cell Lesions (260-0077)
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can occur on the vulva, vagina and penis, and intraepithelial neoplasia is a recognised precursor at these sites. Vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) and penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN) are uncommon, so awareness is key to recognition.
Confirmation of diagnosis, appropriate treatment and follow-up are important to prevent development of SCC. This session covers the aetiology, clinical presentation and management of VIN, VaIN, PeIN and SCC at these sites.
