Description
This session looks at the management of HSV at all stages of infection and associated complications. It specifically looks at the role and limitations of antiviral therapies.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the different stages of HSV infection that may present as initial episode genital herpes
  • Describe the range of clinical features that may be associated with initial and recurrent episode HSV
  • Explain the role of antiviral therapy in the management of initial and recurrent genital HSV
  • Describe the management of suspected acquisition episode genital HSV
  • Describe the range of local, systemic and psychological complications of initial episode genital herpes
  • Describe the range of therapy options for recurrent genital herpes and the factors you would consider in choosing between them

Before commencing this session you should complete the sessions:

  • Module 04/Genital Herpes: Virology and Pathogenesis (260-0060)
  • Module 04/Genital Herpes: Natural History and Complications (260-0059)

First episode genital ulceration due to herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a frequent problem.

Clinical presentations are highly variable and its natural history depends on a number of factors.

This session takes you through the common and serious features of this problem and explains the reasons for our current management strategies.
