Essentials of skin care
This session discusses the importance of skin care and assessment. It presents an overview of the skin and how it changes over the lifespan. 

This session will be of benefit to health and care workers, practitioners or carers across any care setting. 

Learning outcomes
The learning outcomes and content of the session have been developed for Level 4 study. By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • name the main features and functions of the skin
  • describe the importance of the skin barrier in maintaining healthy skin
  • recognise features of healthy, vulnerable and damaged skin
  • describe the importance of skin assessment
  • recall the key steps of a skin assessment
  • describe the care and support required to manage healthy, vulnerable and damaged skin 
  • record and report findings from a skin assessment 
  • value the importance of good communication and interpersonal skills with the multidisciplinary team
