This unit of study provides students with opportunities to consolidate and expand their clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes within the specialty of interventional radiology nursing. It concentrates on healthcare in the periprocedural environment. In applying theory to practice providing optimum nursing care, students examine, anatomy and physiology, pharmacokinetics preparing people for procedures and managing techniques and technology specific to the procedural environment. The nurse working in interventional radiology needs a sound foundation of physiology, disease processes, assessment and management options to form the basis for clinical decision-making and problem-solving.

Theme 1: Applied anatomy and physiology in interventional radiology

Apply an advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology to nursing care of people undergoing interventional radiological procedure

Theme 2: Pharmacotherapy

Analyse the pharmacotherapy of medication used in interventional radiology and the associated care management implications

Theme 3: Interventional radiology procedures and associated nursing care

Critically reflect on the advanced knowledge and skills required of the multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe environment for staff and people undergoing interventional radiology procedures

Theme 4: Evaluation of care

Evaluate the nursing care of a person undergoing an interventional radiology procedure to ensure that physical and psychological needs are met
