This unit of study will give the opportunity to develop, extend and integrate your existing knowledge and skills in relation to delivery of care to patients who have breast cancer.

This unit of study has been developed to provide the nurse greater insight into the disease and its impact, to enable them to develop appropriate care and support.

Diagnosis and current treatment options will be discussed to enable the registered nurse the skills needed to support in adjusting from diagnosis of breast cancer to subsequent treatments.

Theme 1: Introduction to breast cancer

Explore the impact of breast cancer on individuals and families from a local, national and international perspective.

Theme 2: Breast Cancer: Statistics, Competencies, Screening, and Awareness

Demonstrate specialist knowledge about breast cancer concepts epidemiology and their associated pathology.

Theme 3: Diagnosing breast cancer and the role of a breast care nurse in the multidisciplinary team

Critically analyse the role of breast care nurse and the multidisciplinary team for the provision of evidence-based contemporary care.

Theme 4: Breast cancer treatments and holistic management of treatment induced side effects

Critically examine the current breast cancer treatments, clinical trials and the holistic management of treatment-induced side effects.

Theme 5: Cultural safety and clinical trials

Demonstrate an awareness of cultural safety and the needs of the culturally and linguistically diverse populations and First Nations Australians.
