Lumps Of The Neck course for Dental Practice
This session describes the basic clinicopathological and radiological presentations of lumps that present within the neck.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe common lumps that present in the neck
- List aetiological factors of neck lumps
- Recall the basic clinicopathological features of neck lumps
The neck is commonly divided into the anterior and posterior triangles, each with further subdivisions. This allows compartmentalisation of the anatomy and can aid the clinician in the localisation of superficial masses.
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- Embryological development of the neck
- Anatomical structure of the neck
- Basic principles in clinical assessment of lumps
- Commonly used histological terms
Adam qualified at Cardiff Dental School in 2001 and undertook vocational training at Swansea. Following this he gained SHO experience in Periodontology, Oral Medicine, as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Subsequently, Adam was appointed as a Specialist Registrar/Honorary Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Sheffield NHS Teaching Trust/University of Sheffield. During this time, he completed his PhD on ’The role of ADAM – integrin interactions on epithelial cell behaviour’ and gained his FRCPath from the Royal College of Pathologists. Adam is now a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
