This session describes the dietary approaches for managing people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It highlights dietary resources and the range of dietetic services that are available both in the community and in diabetes centres.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Offer basic dietary advice to a patient with diabetes
  • Be aware of the evidence base for the low-GI diet
  • Calculate the body mass index
  • Enable patients to access more information about healthy diet
  • Describe the role of the diabetes dietitian

Healthy eating advice is important for everyone, whether diabetic or not.

Tutangi Amataiti,
Specialist Diabetes Dietitian, St Georges Hospital, London

Tutangi has the PGDip in Dietetics, Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Bachelor of Physical Education degree and qualified as a dietitian in New Zealand in 2004.

Tutangi is registered with the HPC (Health Professions Council) and is also a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and DMEG - Diabetes Special interest group of the BDA.

Tutangi’s professional interests include delivering the structured education programme (DAFNE) as a qualified DAFNE educator. She is also a trained Insulin Pump educator and delivers education for patients on insulin pump therapy. Additional areas of interest include, diet and lifestyle advice for Type 2 diabetes, antenatal clinic, renal/diabetes clinic and carbohydrate counting.
