This session provides core knowledge of the clinical features and management of different types of glaucoma in primary care.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in May 2021.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the differences between acute angle-closure glaucoma, primary open-angle and secondary glaucoma and list the groups of patients at risk of these
  • recognise the symptoms of high intraocular pressure
  • explain the value of routine sight tests in glaucoma screening
  • explain how to manage and monitor a patient with chronic glaucoma
  • identify common patient ideas, expectations and beliefs about glaucoma and explain how to use eye drops correctly.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can lead to blindness by damage to the optic nerve, which causes extra blind spots in the peripheral visual field.
