This session provides a general introduction to the health and care needs of people with learning disabilities.

This session was reviewed by Dirk Palet and last updated in July 2018.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • define the term ‘learning disabilities’ and explain the terminology used by service users, organisations and institutions
  • explain the roles of the key organisations and institutions involved with the care of people with learning disabilities

Most of us have had limited undergraduate and postgraduate training in meeting the health needs of people with learning disabilities. Some of us have concerns about how to communicate, where to start and how to engage. In the past there may have been a reliance on specialist institutional health care services which are no longer available.

Instructors / Speakers
Matt Hoghton,
General Practitioner and Medical Director

I have been a GP partner for 18 years and in addition to my practice responsibilities I am a Medical Director in an Independent Healthcare provider. I have been involved in the care of adults with Learning disabilities in both secondary care institutions and the community. As part of the RCGP Learning Disabilities group I have represented the College to Department of Health in Good Practice in Cervical and Breast Screening for Women with a Learning Disability and been part of the DoH Task Force for Valuing People.

As a trainer I have been involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate training for doctors in the care of people with learning disabilities. I have been fortunate to have collaborated and been mentored by some truly inspirational people including Phoebe Caldwell and Graham Martin to produce some research and publications regarding ways that care can be improved .
