A case-based approach to the recognition and management of the common viral exanthems of childhood.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in October 2021.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain the common viral exanthems of childhood and distinguish the clinical features
  • identify features that distinguish viral exanthems from other potentially devastating causes of rashes
  • formulate relevant management plans and advise parents appropriately
  • report notifiable diseases
  • outline a strategy for managing a pregnant woman who has, or who has been in contact with, a viral exanthem

This session takes a case-based approach to looking at viral exanthems.

You will be presented with a series of hypothetical cases and asked to consider the best way forward in each instance. All of these cases are based on everyday situations, but have been fictionalised.
