This session describes the common childhood ear, nose and throat conditions seen in primary care, including: croup, airway obstruction, acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion and allergic rhinitis. Diagnostic criteria and management options are discussed.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the diagnosis and management of childhood ENT conditions in primary care
  • Describe appropriate referrals to secondary care
  • Explain appropriate use of time as a diagnostic tool for ENT conditions
  • Outline an evidence-based approach to antibiotic prescribing for ENT conditions

This session addresses the assessment and management of a range of common ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions in children. Specifically these include: croup and airway obstruction, acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion and allergic rhinitis.

Joanna Coy works as a GP Partner within Fife, and is responsible for general clinical duties in a busy semi-rural practice with 7000 patients in a relatively deprived area of Fife.

Jo qualified from Edinburgh University in 2001 and she undertook a GP training rotation in Fife. She was a part-time lecturer at Paisley University in 1998 and was awarded her PhD for a thesis on Epstein Barr Virus induced Lymphoma in Transgenic Mice from Glasgow University in 1997.
