Confidentiality and consent are paramount in the doctor-patient relationship; but the patient's interests may require appropriate communication with non medical personnel and occupational health services.

This session explores the framework and the added value to patient care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the information that is appropriate to go into a written report
  • Recognise when it is in the best interests of a patient to disclose information to a third party
  • Recognise how occupational health professionals might support a patient

Medical practice relies on creating a safe, open and trusting relationship in which a patient feels comfortable to disclose personal and often sensitive information.

Instructors / Speakers
Debbie Cohen,
Co-lead of the new National Programme for Work and Health for the Royal College of General Practitioners

Dr. Cohen is a Senior Medical Research Fellow at the Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research, School of Medicine, Cardiff University. She previously worked for 15 years as a General Practitioner. In 2000 she left General Practice to develop her career further in Occupational Medicine.

Debbie’s doctoral thesis (MD) investigated the fitness for work consultation in General Practice. This work led to the development of an e-learning programme for GPs that is informed by motivational interviewing. More recently she has led the development of Healthy Working Wales and a UK project that has developed a new website for primary care about work and health. A similar site for employers will be completed later this year for Wales. She has also developed and now co-leads the new National Programme for Work and Health for the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Debbie’s interests are in work and health, complex communication and how communication issues impact on the health and wellbeing of people in work.
