This session looks at the potential impact that a health condition can have on a patient who is in work, on the patient's colleagues and on the public. It also examines ways in which these risks can be managed by GPs and employers.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the potential impact of common health problems on work performance
  • Describe the impact of different treatments on an individual's fitness to work
  • Describe the impact of health problems and treatment on the safety of the individual, colleagues and members of the public
  • Manage potential conflict when dealing with issues of fitness for work

In many cases, patients with common health problems (mild/moderate musculoskeletal, mental health and cardio-respiratory conditions) recover relatively quickly and can continue to work. Therefore, many such patients do not seek help from their GP.

Instructors / Speakers
Debbie Cohen,
Co-lead of the new National Programme for Work and Health for the Royal College of General Practitioners

Dr. Cohen is a Senior Medical Research Fellow at the Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research, School of Medicine, Cardiff University. She previously worked for 15 years as a General Practitioner. In 2000 she left General Practice to develop her career further in Occupational Medicine.

Debbie’s doctoral thesis (MD) investigated the fitness for work consultation in General Practice. This work led to the development of an e-learning programme for GPs that is informed by motivational interviewing. More recently she has led the development of Healthy Working Wales and a UK project that has developed a new website for primary care about work and health. A similar site for employers will be completed later this year for Wales. She has also developed and now co-leads the new National Programme for Work and Health for the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Debbie’s interests are in work and health, complex communication and how communication issues impact on the health and wellbeing of people in work.
