This session looks at the type of support and services that can be offered for both children and adults to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

This session was reviewed by Jamie Blackshaw (Project Lead), Penny Blair, Lisa Thompson and Elaine Boylan and updated in January 2017.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define the role of healthcare professionals, and how you can support individuals and families through an appropriate pathway of care
  • Identify the lifestyle factors (nutrition and physical activity) where an individual and families could be supported to make changes
  • Describe the types of weight management services that individuals could be signposted to
  • Define when drug treatment for obesity should be considered and describe the drugs available
  • Describe when surgery might be an appropriate consideration

Obesity is highly prevalent in England impacting on individuals physically, psychologically and socially, and on the nation as a whole in terms of the impact on the NHS and the economy.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Complete the e-LfH obesity sessions:
    • Introduction to Obesity (620-1)
    • Identifying Overweight and Obesity and Risk Factors for Weight Gain (620-2)
  • Have an understanding of supporting behaviour change
  • Have a knowledge of the metabolic causes of obesity

Jamie Blackshaw,
Obesity and Healthy Weight Team Lead, Public Health England

Since 2013, Jamie has led Public Health England’s Obesity and Healthy Weight team and is responsible for working across PHE and with national and local partners, to develop and deliver action to prevent and tackle excess weight.

This includes action on preventative whole systems approaches; developing the evidence base and support to local public health teams on weight management services and contributing towards strategic planning.

A Registered Public Health Nutritionist, he has worked within Government nutrition since 1998, including providing expert advice across Government on school food, cooking skills and early years nutrition. In addition, to Jamie’snutrition expertise, he also studiedfor aMSc in Health Policy, graduating with distinction from Imperial College London. Jamie was awarded the Nutrition Society’s Public Health Nutrition Medal 2015, in recognition of excellence in public health nutrition.
