This session aims to give a brief overview of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the different ways in which women and girls may be affected by FGM
  • Identify the four types of FGM according to the World Health Organization’s classification
  • Describe the legal status of FGM procedures in the UK and abroad
  • Explain how to refer a girl or woman to FGM services, including when mandatory reporting applies
  • Explain what to do if you suspect a child may be at risk of FGM

Health professionals have a key role in providing support for survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM) and in the prevention of FGM in girls and women at risk.

Dan Reisel,
PhD

Dan is a Research Associate with the Translational Research Group at the Institute for Women’s Health, UCL, where he works on improving outcomes for women at risk of gynaecological and breast cancer. He teaches medical ethics and clinical skills as part of the Women’s Health module at UCL Medical School. He trained in Medicine at UCL, prior to which he completed his PhD at the University of Oxford.

Sarah Creighton,
MD FRCOG Consultant Gynaecologist

Sarah is a consultant gynaecologist at University College Hospital and an honorary clinical professor at University College London. She has a clinical and research interest in congenital and acquired anomalies of the genital tract including FGM. She established clinical services at UCH for girls and women with health complications due to FGM. She is a founder member of the FGM National Clinical Group. She has published widely in peer reviewed international journals. She is also a founder member and past Chair of the British Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology.
