This session will review the importance of contraception after childbirth and its role in preventing unintended and closely-spaced pregnancies. It will discuss how and when contraception can be initiated during the postpartum period and provide method-specific guidance about all the commonly available methods and their use at this time.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • 10.4.1 Demonstrate understanding of when to initiate contraception following pregnancy
  • 10.4.2 Explain lactational amenorrhoea method of contraception

The postpartum period is a high-risk time for unintended pregnancy and rapid repeat pregnancy is associated with increased maternal and neonatal risks. Since fertility and sexual activity can resume quickly after childbirth there is a need for effective contraception if unintended pregnancy is to be avoided.
